Preserving and Restoring the Past

Since its founding in 2000, The El Camino Real Questers has raised funds to preserve and restore (P&R) several historic resources in San Diego County.  Some of our past P&R projects include:

* Oceanside Public Library

- Funded the restoration of a 1904 Tabard Inn Library revolving oak bookcase. Tabard Inn Library bookcases were placed in train stations, hotel lobbies, etc. where members could exchange books for 5 cents after joining the subscription library.  We also provided 34 original Tabard Inn library books to the library.

* Mission San Luis Rey - Oceanside, California

- Provided funding for plumbing and drainage to the Peyri Court at the Mission, and for the restoration of three historic fountains

- Sponsored the professional restoration of two 140+ year-old 16' x 10' oil paintings by French artist Leon Trousset that have hung in the Chapel at Mission San Luis Rey since the 1930s

* Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park - Carlsbad, California

We also sponsored the cleaning and restoration of an historic ten-piece ensemble of California Monterrey bedroom furniture for Mr. Carrillo's bedroom.

- Funded the construction and installation of a large display case to hold Leo Carrillo's costumes (shown in the photo on the left and at bottom right)

- Paid for the professional cleaning and restoration of several costumes for display in the case and other locations within the home

* Johansen House, Heritage Park Village and Museum - Oceanside, California -  Built in 1886 by T.S. Paine (and part of it once serving as Oceanside's Post Office), the Johansen House was purchased by the Johansen family at the turn of the century and eventually moved to Heritage Park Village. As part of its restoration, we donated funds for the new flooring (shown on the right).

* Twin Inns - Carlsbad, California - Built as a home in 1887, the structure was purchased in 1919 by a chef named Eddie Kentner who turned it into "The Twin Inns" restaurant and events location (not a hotel). The Inn became famous for its chicken dinners and was open during Prohibition, becoming a popular stop for the Hollywood crowd on their "rum runs" from Los Angeles to Tijuana.  Our group funded the restoration of one of a pair of original guest registers for the Inn, covering 20+ years of history (from 1919 to the early 1940s). The book covers and torn pages were professionally restored. The register is currently on display in the Carlsbad Historical Society building.

* Oceanside Historical Society - Store Regulator Clock, c 1925 - Funded the professional restoration of the clock which was originally installed in Bill Nietfeld's jewelry store that opened in Oceanside's Thill Building in 1925; the clock is currently on display in the Oceanside Historical Society building.
